Slow and steady…
I’m replaying some of the early portions of the game to catch bits of lore-related info that I missed. To this end, I’m making constant edits to the People and Concepts pages.
Also, despite having this game since Japanese launch, I was not aware until today that there is additional dialogue if you choose not to Retry an elimination duel. Boy, I feel pretty dumb.
Rebooting. General updates.
Finally resuming work on this site. First order of things is to edit the general term lists, most of which were written before release.
Now that an official localization is out, I will need to look at the translation and compare it to the original text. A lot of the Nasuverse stuff has been lost in translation because of character limits and the complexity of ruby text, which Nasu LOVES to use. This process will take a while. Otherwise I’ll paraphrase certain passages, like Servant character backgrounds.
- People page updated – more general info, but fewer spoilers.
- Concepts page updated – mostly shuffling terms around. I want to get them into a more logical reading order.
- Places page updated
Servant character sheets are still in progress. I’ve got a lot of it written down, but need to organize and edit the info. Player Servants will also require multiple playthroughs, which I am working on. Just added the beginnings of Archer last night.
I’m debating whether to give Masters their own pages. I don’t want too many spoilers in the general People page, but there is a lot to be said. It would clutter up the menu interface, though. Hmm…
English EXTRA – first impressions
I’ve been checking out the English version some more, up to end of Round 2. Aksys did a mostly decent job, but lots of little annoyances here and there.
I wish it had gone through more editing by someone who knows Japanese. Sometimes I see Legendary Soul, sometimes Legendary Spirit. King of Heroes is mistranslated as Hero of Legend. Changes to Saber’s dialogue give away hints to her identity that weren’t there before. Caster’s identity is unintentionally spoiled outright early on in the game. And various small errors and omissions here and there.
It might be worth continuing this site after all? Hm.
Changes:
- Minor edits to Rider page. Integrated some of the better official translations (didn’t know “eventide” was a real word, but I like it), but left ones out that didn’t fit.
- Continue translating Rider keywords, profile
- Archer page created.
EXTRA is out in English!
Aksys, a North American publisher focusing on Japanese-English localization, announced in July 2011 that they had a deal with Marvelous to publish Fate/EXTRA in North America. Well, as of this past week that game is now out.
I personally know a few key people on that localization team and I’m happy to see their work come to fruition, but at the same time this site has lost some of its original purpose since updated information will soon go up on the Type-Moon wikia if it hasn’t already. From what I’ve seen of the localized game the translation is mostly decent (some unintentional spoilers early in the game, though), and I know that the team tried to achieve some degree of parity with lore that international fans are familiar with.
Still, if you would like me to keep working on this resource, let me know in the comments. I’m about 3/4 through my first playthrough now, but haven’t updated the site lately due to RL time commitments. I’m still mulling it over, but I suspect part of the work will involve matching everything up to the new official translations, unless something is actually incorrect.
Round 2 Update
I finally found some time to play my PSP today. I’ve finished playing Round 2, but it will take me a few more days to get all the info updated. I’m thinking about adding individual pages for Masters, but the amount of information isn’t distributed very evenly, so that might not be such a good idea.
That time might be better spent playing the game itself, which I’m sure people have finished dozens of times by now (-_-;;)
- Began updating Archer (Enemy) page
- Corrected a few translation errors on the Rider page
Dog Latin
I had some spare time today and I’ve been translating and transcribing Saber’s powers, and their Japanese and Latin names, sans the power descriptions I haven’t earned and her Noble Phantasm, because I want to find out in the game for myself.
But at some point apparently Nasu figured “Europe=Latin lol” and then mixed French into a third of the power names. The result is a bastardization of Lingua Latina the likes of which I have not seen since J.K. Rowling outsold the fucking Bible.
Notable updates:
- Created Archer (Enemy) page. Blank for now while I work on other things.
- Updated Powers section of Saber page
- Updated Powers section of Rider page
How to be productive at school
Like hunger, boredom can be the greatest motivator to get anything done.
During class today I got about 65% finished filling out the Rider page from her in-game character sheet and biography. Curious – they were written out of context of the Extra universe, as it mentions Gilgamesh from Fate/stay night and distinguishes between Extra and real life.
In case you didn’t notice, the Saber page is also up. But since I’m playing that route at the moment, most of the information will probably not show up until late in the game, and I would be doing us all a disservice by just copying from another site.
Next on my to-do list after I square away the character entries, is to tidy up and revise Concepts. It’s a bit outdated from pre-release hype time, and quite a mess.
Thank you for your patience!
